Help Children Succeed

          Often we are asked if there is anything parents can do at home to help their child(ren) succeed in school.  Listed below are some suggestions.

* Limit the amount of television or movie time your child views.

* We do not recommend putting a television / VCR / DVD in your child's room.

* Be consistent in discipline.

* Have a regular routine/bedtime.

* Make sure your child goes to bed early enough for proper rest.

* Talk to your child and have him/her use words to express wants and needs.  The more your child learns to express him/herself verbally, the more advanced the language and speech development will become.

* Teach your child to be respectful of adults and peers.

* When speaking to your child, have him/her look you in the eye.

* Do not permit your child to argue with you or other adults.

* Do not permit your child to interrupt when an adult is speaking.

* NO means NO!  When you tell your child “NO”, do not change your mind.

* Make sure your child eats well-balanced meals, including breakfast.

* Read to your child and ask questions about the book.

* Have your child participate in family chores; setting the table, feeding the pet, cleaning up after a meal, etc.

* Give your child specific directions for a simple task and see that he/she follows through.

* Teach your child proper bathroom etiquette; flush the toilet and wash hands.

* Show an interest in your child’s daily activities; empty the book bag and ask your child about his/her work.

* Teach your child proper table manners; sit while eating, use “please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me”.   Teach your child to use a fork and spoon properly.  Encourage your child to chew with his/her mouth closed.

* Have meals together as a family at the table.

* Teach your child the difference between inside behavior; quiet voices and walking feet and outside behavior; loud voices, screaming and running.

 * Teach your child to clean up after him/herself.

Thank you for your continued support and trust.
